The Rockit for Kids Summer Concert is the culminating event of a six-week program offered by the Count Basie Theatre Cool School and Rockit for Kids, directed by Bruce Gallipani. The program's goal is to help young musicians learn and grow through music and performance, as well as provide an instant opportunity to learn teamwork, cooperation and good rehearsal and performance technique by playing Rock & Roll with their peers. Admission to the program is by audition only. Once admitted, guitarists, drummers, vocalists, bass players, keyboardists, brass players and string players are brought together to rehearse and perform live as a band, experiencing the dynamics of working together as an ensemble to achieve a common goal. The Two River Times called the last Rockit Summer Concert, "...an entertaining show from a group of kids with confidence, talent and what can only be described as a burning desire to perform. Many of the 500 in attendance were on their feet on more than one occasion." It's a fun show even if you don't have a child enrolled in the program! For audition information contact the Education Department at 732-224-8778 x106.

This performance is at Red Bank Regional High School, 101 Ridge Road, Little Silver, NJ.

All proceeds will benefit Red Bank Middle School Music Program.

Ever wonder what actor, writer, producer, director, editor and Monmouth County native Kevin Smith's top 5 favorite movies are? This is your big chance! Celebrate the re-opening of the Count Basie Theatre after being closed for interior renovations this summer with a no-holds-barred Q&A with the audience. For the uninitiated, Smith is the local native whose films include Clerks (1994), which won the highest award at the Sundance Film Festival; Mallrats (1995); Chasing Amy (1997), which won two Independent Spirit Awards for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Role; Dogma (1999); Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001); Jersey Girl (2004) and Clerks II (2006). He's also an award winning comic book writer; a film school drop out; an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (Illinois Wesleyan University, 2000); owner of his own comic book store (Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank and now in California) and his own production company (ViewAskew) and he makes short films for the Jay Leno Show. His new movie, "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," is set for release just a week earlier, so this could be a very interesting and timely dialogue!

Songs he first recorded are now standards, including 24 Top 40 Hits like "I Wanna Be Around," "The Good Life," "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)" and his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." His groundbreaking 1994 performance on MTV, which revolutionized pop music with the blockbuster hit record Unplugged, caused the New York Times to say that, "Tony Bennett has not just bridged the generation gap, he has demolished it. He has solidly connected with the younger crowd weaned on rock. And there have been no compromises." Tony Bennett is one of the rare artists who can move the hearts and the soul of an audience. Much more than a concert, In the Mood is a retro 1940s Musical, a Big Band Theatrical Swing Revue featuring the In the Mood Singers and Dancers and the sensational String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra. In the Mood is a celebration of a time when all America listened and danced to the same music, which moved a nation's spirit, helped win a World War and set the mood for a future filled with promise, hope and prosperity. The arrangements are as authentic as it gets, with the up-tempo big band instruments and intimate, romantic ballads of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Harry James, The Andrews Sisters and Frank Sinatra all included. The National Archives brought In the Mood to Washington D.C. as part of their commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of WWII. The engagement was twice extended, repeated in 1993 outside on Constitution Avenue and since then In the Mood has toured the States and Europe repeatedly.

He is electrifying." In addition to old favorites, David will perform music from his brand new CD Try Me One More Time, which garnered a Grammy Award nomination and four star reviews like this one from Variety: "A master with nothing left to prove to himself or to others, Bromberg made this album to enjoy, not to impress. The Chicago Tribune calls Momix "inspired vaudevillians" and "crowd pleasers," giving their programs, "A charge of amusement and excitement absent for many years from modern dance." The NY Times calls Momix, "This zany group," the Toronto Globe and Mail calls Momix "mad and marvelous," and the L.A. Herald Examiner says, "Momix is ideal for turning audiences onto dance."

A beautifully orchestrated presentation of Chinese circus acts dating back to the harvest festivals of 2000 years ago, but in a modern day performance with fabulous choreography, amazing lighting, enchanting scenery and powerful music, the New Shanghai Circus was the first Chinese acrobatic troupe ever to appear on Broadway. The astonishing athletes of the New Shanghai Circus routinely defy gravity, stretching the limits of human ability in each spellbinding performance. If it's humanly possible and sometimes even if it's not, the company's acrobats, jugglers and contortionists do it with spectacular flair. The New York Times described their performance as, "Feats of circus art that reach literally breathtaking heights of skill...the New Shanghai Circus is providing entertainment in abundance;" The Boston Globe said, "Everyone was delighted with their skill poise, charm and flourish...a very entertaining show...;" and the Los Angeles Times described the performance as, "Showstopping rarities of daunting difficulty." CBS News said simply, "Fantastic."

The Tony Award-winning musical conceived, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp and based on 24 classic songs by Billy Joel, Movin' Out tells the story of lifelong friends through two turbulent decades that change them and the world around them forever. From post-World War II idealism, to Vietnam-era unrest, and finally, survival, we follow main characters that you will recognize straight from Billy Joel's lyrics: Brenda and Eddie from "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant;" Tony and Sergeant O'Leary from "Movin' Out;" Judy from "Why, Judy, Why;" and James from "James." Their story is told completely through dance, with no dialogue whatsoever and songs like "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," "We Didn't Start the Fire," and "Pressure," performed by a live band, all come together to weave a musical backdrop beautifully complementing Twyla Tharp's innovative choreography. Movin' Out played Broadway for over three years, longer than dance musicals such as Contact, Fosse and Bring in 'Da Noise/Bring in 'Da Funk, and now the national tour comes to the Basie. "So exhilarating and soul-stirring, it practically bursts out of the theatre," said Time Magazine.
